Creating A New Font

Happy weekend! They always go so fast, don’t they? We have friends in from out of town, so it seemed to fly by even faster.  But I did manage to accomplish a few things, including creating my own fonts.  I get that if you aren’t a blogger, maybe this isn’t something that you would want to do.  But then I mentioned what I was doing to a girlfriend, and she got all excited that maybe her little boys could create fonts in their cute little boy handwriting and she could use it for scrapbooking.  And then it occurred to me that maybe there are other useful things you can do with your own font.  I’m sure you can come up with something! As for me, I wanted to create a font using my handwriting so that I could include it in my blog posts.  I’m still a newby to blogging, so of course I follow a lot of blogs to get ideas and inspiration from.  I noticed that some of my favorite blogs include a signature, and so I thought, I want one! Cue the whiny kid voice.

After some research, I found this post by a really cool blogger and followed her instructions to make a blog signature of my own.  It was surprisingly easy!

First, go to www.myscriptfont.com and print out their template.  Here is one of mine, already completed:

MyScriptFont.com Sheet

Next, fill out your template with a medium felt tip pen (A.K.A. a sharpie).  Per my inspiration’s advice, I added my own flair in the bottom row by creating emoticons and a heart instead of what the template called for.  Do whatever suits your fancy, just don’t create anything outside the template’s lines. Here is one of mine:

Complete "Amy" Font

Yes, I got carried away, and did four of them.  I’m telling you, it was super easy! The one above is my “Amy” font.

Once you have your template filled out, scan them to your computer.

Then, find the files on your computer and upload them to the website.  To get the full instructions for this, click on the about section.

Finally, create a document with your brand new font! To create your own blog signature, just go to the blog post I told you about earlier and follow the instructions there.  Here are my four signatures.  Which one do you like the best?

They aren’t terribly different, I know.  My handwriting doesn’t get too varied, even when I try.  Maybe one day I’ll create something more creative, but I’m pretty happy with what I came up with in the meantime.  I hope you have fun making your own font, and let me know what you think!

"Phoenix" Font

P.S. This one is my favorite!
