Oh, hey! I’m just going to slink back in here like I haven’t been missing for the last nine months, NBD. I haven’t been missing, you have! Ha! Seriously, though, I’ve been working hard redesigning all of Painted Posies land and trying to figure out the direction I want to go from here. After all that time trying not to pitch my laptop off the roof because of technical difficulties – isn’t technology grand?!? – and really thinking hard about what I want to do with my photography gig, I’ve decided to redirect the blog just a little bit. I still plan to share bits and pieces of my projects and definitely my travel and lifestyle photography, but I want to also offer some resources for people prepping for their future photo shoot with Painted Posies Photography. Gotta get with that self-promo, yo. So, then. Moving on to just that kinda thing and answering one of the most often asked questions before a photo shoot: What should I wear? AND What colors look best in photos? Intro the photo shoot color scheme series. Womp, womp.
Photo Shoot Color Scheme: Dusty Pink, Navy and Gray
Women’s Photo Shoot Color Scheme Options: Dusty Pink, Navy & Gray
Let’s start with the ladies. Because let’s be fair – they’re probably the ones setting up their family’s photoshoot. All of the outfits I chose are from Stitch Fix where they showcase outfit ideas with some of their clothing choices. Do you do Stitch Fix? A coworker here does and she’s on the fence. Did you know they have a men’s line, too? I considered trying it after checking out their site yesterday, so if you have an opinion on it, please share!
The trick to picking a color scheme for your photo shoot is not making everyone too matchy-matchy. Pick two-three colors and then use neutrals to break it all up. Jeans, khakis, grey and cream can all be considered neutrals. I love that these outfits are all casual but still a little dressy, which gives your photographer lots of pose and backdrop/location options to choose from. Next, for the kids.

More casual outfit choices that break up the color scheme. The pink dress above with the yellow flowers is pushing the color theme a little bit, but I think it would work with the gray boy’s outfit at the top and mom’s sleeveless blue dress above. Next, on to dad.

Luckily, more and more guys embrace wearing pink these days, especially when it’s a dusty pink. If your guy isn’t one of those dudes, he could easily eliminate that color and wear just the navy and gray instead. It’s best if at least one person in a group of four isn’t wearing one of the bolder colors, anyway.
One thing you’ll notice in these outfits is that I didn’t entirely avoid prints, even though they do make things trickier for your photographer. As long as prints are small and there aren’t too many, they come across as more texture/less crazy.
So there you have it, my first photo shoot color scheme post. Let me know what you think! Do you have any questions or suggestions? Is there a particular photo shoot dilemma you want help with? Don’t be shy, I want to know!
